About Dr. Figler: Richard A. Figler, MD, is a Staff physician in the Center for Sports Health at Cleveland Clinic. He is also Team Physician for Solon High School and John Carroll University. Dr. Figler is board-certified in family medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.

 

 

 

About Dr. Luciano: Dr. Mark Luciano is board-certified in general neurosurgery and in pediatric neurosurgery. He is Head of Congenital and Pediatric Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the Pediatric Neurology Center at Cleveland Clinic. His patients are children and adults with neurological congenital anomalies, hydrocephalus, cerebral cysts, tumors, craniofacial anomalies, tethered cord, Chiari malformation and cerebral palsy.

Dr. Luciano also directs the Neuroendoscopy and CSF Disorders program. He has an established clinical program, research and educational work in neuroendoscopy, a form of minimally invasive neurosurgery. Dr. Luciano has directed Cleveland-area, national and international courses in neuroendoscopy and has developed new techniques in minimally invasive neurosurgery.

As a result of his recognized leadership in hydrocephalus, Dr. Luciano has been on the National Hydrocephalus Association advisory board and has appeared in the local and national press and television including the Wall Street Journal, Woman’s Day, and the Today Show.

In addition to national publications, peer-review and editorial activity, Dr. Luciano is an internationally invited speaker in neuroendoscopy, hydrocephalus and pediatric neurosurgery. He was the “Brahm Prakash Memorial Orator” in New Dehli, India, and has been invited as visiting professor and speaker in India, China, Egypt and Europe. He has initiated an international cooperation between Cleveland Clinic and Peking Union Medical Center in Beijing, China, for education in neuroendoscopy. In addition, he has served as host and thesis mentor for international MD research fellows from Egypt and Sweden.

TOPIC: Limitations of Surgical Treatment in the Relief of Headaches: Value of a Multidisciplinary Team

About Dr. Rothner: A. David Rothner, MD, is Chairman Emeritus of the Section of Child Neurology and Director of the Pediatric/Adolescent Headache Program at Cleveland Clinic. He also directs the Patient Education Program in the Division of Education.

Dr. Rothner received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Following completion of an internship and junior residency in pediatrics at the Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, he completed a senior residency in pediatrics at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center’s Babies Hospital in New York City. Dr. Rothner continued his training at the Neurologic Institute of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center with a fellowship in pediatric neurology. He has been a member of the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics and Neurology at Cleveland Clinic since 1973.

Currently, Dr. Rothner is the Chairman Emeritus of the Section of Child Neurology at Cleveland Clinic. He is also Vice-Chairman of the Division of Education. He serves as a Fellow of the American Academies of Pediatrics and Neurology, and has served on the advisory boards of the Epilepsy Foundation of America and the March of Dimes. Dr. Rothner directs the Pediatric/Adolescent Headache Program and also directs the efforts of the Patient Education Program.

Dr. Rothner sits on the editorial board of Pediatrics Today and Headache Quarterly. He has published over 250 original articles, book chapters, tapes and reviews in the areas of epilepsy, headaches in children and general pediatric neurology. He is Co-Editor of the textbook, Headache in Children and Adolescents.

DAIRY QUEEN FUNDRAISER

Thank you to the Twinsburg Dairy Queen and all those that came out to support the Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation (CSF) DQ Fundraiser. To date, the CSF Cleveland Chapter has been able to raise almost $1,900 during the past few years with these DQ nights.  About Dr. Recinos: Dr. Recinos is a Pediatric and Adult Neurosurgeon with special interests in the treatment of tumors of the brain and spinal cord. Originally from New Jersey, she completed her Undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland, and stayed on to complete her medical school, Neurosurgical Residency and Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In the pediatric group, she treats a wide array of pediatric and congenital neurosurgical issues including hydrocephalus, chiari malformation, craniosynostosis, tethered cord, and brain and spinal cord tumors. In the adult population, she sub-specializes in the treatment of adult brain tumors as well as chiari malformation. She also has special interest in minimally invasive, endsocopic assisted neurosurgery. She joins us at the Cleveland Clinic as the Section Head of Pediatric Neurosurgical Oncology.

 Expert Speakers: Dr. Edward C. Benzel and Dr. Judith Scheman, Cleveland Clinic

Topic: "Chiari & Syringomyelia: The Many Faces of Pain"

Dr. Ed Benzel, Dr. Judith Scheman and Dr. Ed Covington spoke at the June 23rd Education and Awareness Event held in the Bunts Auditorium at the Cleveland Clinic. The physicians spoke on the topic of “Chiari and Syringomyelia: The Many Faces of Pain”. Dr. Benzel discussed Chiari malformation, syringomyelia, and pain specifically associated with these disorders; Dr. Scheman spoke about Chiari malformation, fibromyalgia and overlapping symptoms; and Dr. Covington discussed the mechanisms for pain, how pain is perceived in your body, and alternative methods to deal with pain.


About Dr. Scheman: Judith Scheman, PhD, is a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic's Department of Psychiatry and Psychology, Section of Pain Management. Dr. Scheman specializes in chronic pain rehabilitation. Dr. Scheman graduated Cum Laude, with honors in psychology, at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. She earned an MA and PhD at Kent State University, Kent, OH.

Dr. Scheman is a member of the American Psychological Association and American Pain Society. She is the author of several articles and has presented at many national and international conferences.
