2nd Annual Charity Ball

Date:
March 28, 2009
Location:

Hilton Garden Inn
1100 South Avenue at Lois Lane
Staten Island, New York

CSF honored Bob Jones IV, who was our guest speaker for the evening, and celebrated the legacy of Bobby Jones.

At this year’s Charity Ball, we were joined by friends from the world of golf and boxing to help spread awareness and raise the much needed capital to fund research and programs around the country.

The evening began with a reception for the Bobby Jones Society Members where the 2008 Bobby Jones Society award winners were honored: Bess Kindlon, the Jordan Family Foundation, Paul J. Farrell, Michael and Denise Mikula, Conquer for Kaya, Douglas and Karen Kindlon, Bob and Toni Rumphrey, James and Mary Ellen Feisthamel, Andrew and Stephanie Van Eekeren, Denise Aversano, Candida Lancaster, Richard Ray Bley, Marsha Carlson, Eric and Kristin Maul, Chuck and Tami Stencel, Richard and Heather Hoffman, Jr., George Amann, Andrew Merson, Ford Motor Company Fund, Pro-Pak Industries, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Schiffman, and Farrell Family members.

We then moved to the Trevi Garden room and enjoyed cocktails and delicious food with raffle baskets on display. Guests were busy depositing tickets in each canister for a chance to win one of the 90 beautiful baskets. At 8pm, the Persimmons Ballroom doors opened and we were greeted by great music and over 90 silent auctions items including autographed John Duddy boxing memorabilia, a “Golf with Bob Jones IV” package, a Nintendo Wii, an Ipod Touch and many other fabulous trips, jewelry and furs.

Dr. Bob Jones IV was this year’s honoree. Dr. Jones is a clinical psychologist and the grandson of legendary golfer, Bobby Jones, who suffered with syringomyelia from 1944 until his death in 1971. Dr. Jones’ involvement with CSF reflects both his and the entire Jones family’s commitment to the mission of this organization. Dr. Jones was accompanied by his lovely wife Mimi. The Jones family was also represented by Mimi Jones-Hedwig, granddaughter of Bobby Jones, and her husband Doug Hedwig who joined the festivities for the evening. Dr. Jones gave a riveting speech about his grandfather and even read some letters written by the late golfer to his doctors about the amount of pain he was living with.

Also attending the Ball was undefeated middleweight Irish boxer, John Duddy, and his manager Craig Hamilton. Mr. Duddy has won all 27 of his professional matches with 17 of those being knockouts. John graciously donated a set of signed boxing gloves, boxing shorts and the highlight of the evening was when Mr. Duddy and manager, Mr. Hamilton auctioned off ringside seats to his next fight against Billy Lyell at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on April 24th. The winning bid for this item was $1,300!

CSF was happy to sign papers for establishment of the third CSF Chapter in Utica, NY. Thanks go out to Jim and Mary Ellen Feisthamel for all their dedication and hard work. Chapters have already been established in Denver, CO and Cleveland, OH.
